Description

The photo shows a cross-section through a stem of Sparganium erectum, a water plant whose fruit takes the form of small balls surrounded by spikes, resembling a hedgehog. It mainly occurs in the northern part of the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, and is associated with water edges. It blooms from late spring to late summer, and its fruits mature in late summer and autumn. It is an important food source for ducks in autumn and winter.
