Ceres is the closest dwarf planet to the Sun, being the largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, with a diameter of about 965 kilometers. Ceres has been studied with telescopes for over 200 years and became the first dwarf planet to be explored by a spacecraft (2015).
