Description

The photo shows a cross-section through a Lilac leaf, a woody plant from the olive family. Lilacs are popular ornamental plants in parks and gardens and naturally occur in forests and thickets from southern Europe to eastern Asia. They can reach heights of 2 to 10 meters and bloom on one-year-old wood. Their flowers are distinctive, gathered in large, elongated clusters with an intense, sweet scent. In the upper leaf, one can observe thin oblong cells that carry out photosynthesis. Underneath, there are cells that provide stiffness to the leaf and transport water and nutrients. Lilacs are hosts to some species of moths that lay eggs on the leaves and feed on the plant sap.
