Description

The illustration shows a cross-section through a pine needle. Pine (Pinus L. 1753) is a genus of plants in the family Pinaceae Lindl., comprising almost 115 species of trees and shrubs. Pines are evergreen plants with long, narrow needles that are known for their wide tolerance to environmental conditions and temperatures. They reproduce sexually, producing separate male and female cones, and their seeds mature in hard, woody cones. Pines are a source of food for many insects and are an important source of timber, resin, essential oils, and edible seeds.
