Description

The photo shows a cross-section through of a Potamogeton stalk, which is one of the many species of aquatic plants in the family Potamogetonaceae. Potamogeton species are found worldwide and play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, creating habitats for many organisms and serving as a source of food for aquatic animals. Additionally, they stabilize sediment and accelerate the deposition of suspended solids in the water. The roots of Potamogeton plants are colonized by nitrifying bacteria, which contribute to biogeochemical processes in the water. In Poland, there are 18 species of Potamogeton and numerous hybrids, which differ in their structure and habitat preferences. The stems of Potamogeton can reach a length of up to 2.5 meters, making them some of the longest aquatic plants.
