The presented image depicts a cross-section through an Alfalfa stem, a perennial flowering plant in the legume family, commonly used as feed for cattle worldwide. Similar to clover, it lives in symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, which enable it to extract nitrogen from the air. This ability allows it to produce high-protein feed regardless of the available nitrogen in the soil, increasing agricultural efficiency. Alfalfa is grown both for pastures and for hay and silage, and its leaves can be used in human diets as an addition to salads. This plant prefers well-drained soils with a neutral pH and sustained levels of potassium and phosphorus. It is usually cut three to four times a year in most climates, but in some areas, it can be harvested up to 12 times per year. Average yields are typically around 8 tons per hectare in temperate environments, but yields of up to 20 tons per hectare have been recorded.
