Description

The Antennae Galaxy consists of two spiral galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, which merged as a result of a collision. The culmination of the collision occurred approximately 500 million years ago. They are located about 45 million light-years away from our Earth. The brightest and most compact regions of star formation are called super star clusters. The majority of the super star clusters formed during the collision of the Antennae galaxies will disperse, with individual stars becoming part of the smooth background structure of the galaxy. It is estimated that about 10% of the newly formed super star clusters will survive beyond 10 million years, and around a hundred of the largest super star clusters have the potential to survive and become regular globular clusters, similar to the globular clusters in our own Galaxy.
