In the picture we see a fragment of Orion, called the Sword of Orion because of its appearance. The Orion Nebula (M 42 or NGC 1976) is one of the brightest and most famous nebulae in the sky, located in the constellation of Orion. It is an area of new star formation, and is also a source of intense ultraviolet radiation that causes the gases within it to glow. The Orion Nebula is located about 1,350 light years away.
