Description

Comment 67P (Churyumov-Gerasimenko) has a diameter of about 4 km and the current orbital period of the sun is about 6.5 years. However, as a result of close flybys of Jupiter, its trajectory changes. By 1840, the comet's perihelion distance was 4 AU too far, in 1840 Jupiter changed its orbit to a perihelion distance of 3 AU, and later encounters further reduced this distance to 2.77 AU. In February 1959, a close encounter with Jupiter shifted the Churyumov-Gerasimenko perihelion to about 1.29 AU (193 million km). The next change is to take place in November 2220 when the comet will pass Jupiter at a distance of 0.12 AU (18 million km), which will move the perihelion to 0.8 AU (120 million km) from the Sun.
