Description

Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae that is common in reptiles and other animals, as well as in water. Salmonella bacteria can cause disease, which is usually transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food. In an excavation from 6,500 years ago, the DNA of this bacterium was found, indicating that mankind has struggled with this disease for a long time. Salmonella is an intracellular pathogen, and some of its serotypes cause illness. Nontyphoidal serotypes are zoonotic and can be transferred from animal-to-human and from human-to-human. Typhoidal serotypes can only be transferred from human-to-human and can cause food-borne infection, typhoid fever, and paratyphoid fever.
