Yersinia enterocolitica is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family Yersiniaceae. The bacterium is motile at temperatures of 22–29°C, but becomes nonmotile at normal human body temperature. Infection with Y. enterocolitica causes yersiniosis, an animal-borne disease that affects humans as well as a wide range of animals including cattle, deer, pigs, and birds. Many of these animals recover from the disease and become carriers, serving as potential sources of contagion despite showing no signs of illness. The bacterium infects the host by adhering to its cells using trimeric autotransporter adhesins.
