Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a Gram-negative, curved, rod-shaped bacterium found in the sea and in estuaries which, when ingested, can cause gastrointestinal illness in humans. It is oxidase positive, facultatively aerobic, and does not form spores. Like other members of the Vibrio genus, this species is motile, with a single, polar flagellum.
