NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has observed newly formed stars in the interior of a giant cloud of dust and gas that stretches across the Vela constellation. It is a complex complex of dark, dense clouds of dust and gas that are difficult to detect with visible-light telescopes and is called the Vela Molecular Cloud Ridge. Astronomers have detected four regions of the densest gases in it and named them clouds A, B, C and D. The image shows the first of these clouds, Vela A, about 3,300 light years from Earth.
