Description

The photo depicts a cross-section of a sand grass, also known as marram grass or Ammophila arenaria. This plant is a perennial grass from the family Poaceae, which prefers habitats that are dry, well-drained, sandy, and sunny. It is highly tolerant of salt and cold, but intolerant of wet soils. Sand grass plays an important role in coastal dune ecosystems, as its roots reduce the mobility of the dunes, preventing their migration and stabilizing the environment for other plants. The leaves of the sand grass are adapted to the dry environment by rolling up, which helps minimize water loss through evaporation. The outer surface of the leaves lacks stomata, but only has a thicker protective layer, while the inner surface contains stomata
