Description

The NGC 6302 nebula, also known as the Butterfly Nebula, was formed by a violent outburst of gas from the dying central star. This star has an exceptionally high surface temperature, estimated at 250,000 K. The nebula's stellar material is illuminated by the star's energy. In NGC 6302, the existence of ice was confirmed, as well as hydrocarbons and iron, but no evidence of liquid water was found.
