The Cygnus Loop Nebula, also known as the Veil Nebula, is located about 1,500 light-years from Earth and spans approximately 80 light-years. It is the remnant of a supernova that occurred 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. The filaments of gas and dust visible in ultraviolet light were heated by the shock wave from the supernova, which continues to expand outward from the original explosion. The original supernova was bright enough to be visible to the naked eye from Earth.
